Food Safety
Please remember that for hot foods, it is best to heat all prepared dishes to an internal temp of 165°. When using a microwave, food should be heated to 190°. Cold foods should be stored in the refrigerator below 40°.
Heating instructions are included with each delivery; however, if you misplace your menu, here are some guidelines:
Oven Instructions
For most entrées, side dishes and vegetables, you can simply put the food in an oven safe dish and place in a preheated 350° oven. Any items packaged in an aluminum container can be put directly into the oven.
Most entrées are ready in about 20 minutes. Veggies are usually ready in 10-15 minutes and most starches take about 15 minutes.
Microwaves
If you use a microwave to heat dishes, please be aware that microwaves differ vastly in power which makes it difficult to provide accurate heating instructions. We suggest you start by warming the food for 1-2 minutes, then increase the time as needed.
NOTE: Using high/full power to heat meat dishes can toughen the protein, so try the reheat function or a lower power setting.
Pasta Sauce, Stews and Soups
These moist dishes are best heated on the stovetop in a sauce pan until hot.
Rice and Pastas
While we don’t recommend microwaves much, they do a great job of heating rice and many pasta dishes. Because microwaves differ in strength, start with 1-2 minutes of heating and increase the time if needed.
Sauces and Garnishes
Sauce and garnish containers are marked with color coded dots – just refer to your heating instructions. If dishes have a separate container of sauce or garnish, remove it before heating the entrée.
Use Heat Safe Containers
Any foods packed in paper, foam or plastic containers should be transferred into a heat safe container before heating.
Freezing/Defrosting
Many of our foods can be frozen to better suit your schedule – just check the menu when you order for the Freezer Friendly (F) notation. Items packaged in plastic containers can go straight into the freezer. Entrées packaged in paper boxes should be transferred to a freezer safe container. Frozen items can be kept for 1 month.
Frozen foods should be defrosted in the refrigerator, so we suggest you move the frozen items from the freezer to the refrigerator the night before you want to eat them. If you don’t have a chance to plan ahead, then you can use your microwave to defrost the food before heating it.
